Hi all,
I've been directed here by TwoSpot (from A4A) with regard to a problem my mum has.  She's just been told by the Dr that the reason she's been so ill recently is an allergy to egg (the whole thing) and also poultry.
So, bearing in mind that she is living on a pension and a small amount of savings (and feeding my dad) can you provide any suggestions for meals etc for them?  My dad has already helped out by munching his way through some of the chicken etc in the freezer and started on separating eggy stuff from the non-eggy in the cupboards...  The Dr has been v little help and just said she has to cut out everything and start over.
Also, they are quite worried that they'll have to find a new home for their chickens.  Is it likely that they would cause a problem or is it ok to keep them?
Thanks, wg

Hi Weedy G and welcome to the site!  So sorry to hear that your mum is having allergy problems, something we have had to learn to deal with since number one daughter came kicking and screaming into this world.  She is allergic to eggs and shellfish, the shellfish being the latest!

I cannot help you with advice about the actual chooks, it is my dream to keep them, but her allergy is so dangerous, we have decided it is something we are not prepared to risk until she and her brother are much much older (and more responsible.....so when they are about 40!  Grin)

As for recipe ideas, I have found that I just leave egg out of things, or use milk instead. I have found a powdered egg substitute, which is okay for cakes and biscuits, but no good for mayo or things like yorkies.  Pancakes, I just leave the eggs out, and put some bicarb in and a splash of lemon juice and this works a treat.  You do get used to reading labels all of the time.  It is amazing what things contain egg!  The sweets Chewits for example, and some gravy granuals.  Also beware pasta as some of those, both fresh and dried contain egg.  Another problem is the glaze on some things, especially things like freshly made pies or breads.  They may have been glazed with beaten egg.  Ooo, and certain ice creams - we took the kids to the theatre at the start of the week, and daughter number one had a tub of choccy icecream, and within seconds of starting it her throat was burning and itchy, her tongue was sore and she started to get hives.  Unfortunately, the little icecream pots had no ingredients written on them.  Fortunately, I always carry piriton so dosed her up, and she sat quietly and calmly, and the problem passed - altho she did have a bad nights sleep.

I have rattled on enough....ask me anything you like and I will try to help as best I can!  Grin

My dad has promised to help out some more with shopping so he'll check everything for egg products before they hit to tills.  He's really come into his own on it and we're really pleased that they seem to have sorted it some more now after the original shock.
I've passed on your suggestions re cooking without egg in and mum said she'd try some welsh cakes with milk instead sometime today.
Hopefully they will be able to sort it all out pretty soon and get some kind of normality back.  Thanks a lot, wg
